Walter Lantz Wiki

Walter Lantz New Funnies was a comic series published by Dell before Woody Woodpecker got his own comic series.

The comic series began as The Funnies in 1936 and featured hero comics like Captain Midnight and Phantasmo. Andy Panda first appeared in issue 61. The final issue, #64, featured Andy Panda, Oswald Rabbit and Lil' Eightball on the cover and each had a story in the issue. The issue also featured hero characters.

The next issue, #65, featured a new name, New Funnies. Gone were most of the hero characters and they were replaced with Raggedy Ann & Andy, Peter Rabbit and surprisingly a 1-page Elmer and Bugs Bunny story, as well as Walter Lantz characters Andy Panda, Oswald Rabbit and Lil' Eightball. Felix The Cat also has many appearances in the New Funnies comic.

Starting with issue 109 the comic series was renamed again, this time to Walter Lantz New Funnies, and the comic became nearly exclusively Walter Lantz characters. The series continued on until issue #288 when Dell and Western Publishing parted ways. The Woody Woodpecker comic continued it's numbering in the Gold Key/Whitman era, but Walter Lantz New Funnies did not come back under the new regime.
