Robinson Gruesome is a 1959 Chilly Willy short directed by Alex Lovy. The name is a reference to the 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe.
Plot[]
Chilly Willy's home is an igloo atop an iceberg. The iceberg, floating into warmer waters, finally melts completely away, and Chilly finds himself on a tropical isle. On the island is "Robinson Gruesome," who has lived there 28 years, and whose only food for that period of time has been bananas. Chilly visits Gruesome's home, and immediately, Gruesome envisions a change in his diet. He prepares Chilly for a delectable meal. However, before the roasting pan is put in the oven, Chilly substitutes a large firecracker for himself. Gruesome puts the pan in the oven, and the fumes of something warm cooking waft their way to a large ape sitting outside under a tree. The ape goes into the kitchen, opens the oven door, and is greeted by the exploding firecracker. The ape vents his anger on Gruesome. A battle of wits ensues between the ape and Gruesome, with Chilly assisting from the sidelines. Finally, the ape chases Gruesome off the island, and Chilly is seen standing on a buoy, headed back home to the cold climes from whence he came.
